UPM SERDANG, APRIL 22, 2025 – In celebration of three decades of academic excellence, the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia (FBMK UPM) released a special podcast titled “Three Decades of FBMK UPM: The Beginning of a Long Journey” on 18 April 2025.
Moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Moniza Waheed from the Department of Communication, FBMK, the podcast featured two pivotal figures in the faculty’s founding: YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Abdul Mua’ti @ Zamri Ahmad and Dr. Che Ibrahim Salleh, both former deans of FBMK.
The guests recounted the formative years of the faculty in the early 1990s, including the rationale behind the naming and academic focus. “Modern Languages” was chosen as the anchor, symbolizing a contemporary and globally relevant approach to language education.
They elaborated that the term "modern" does not diminish the value of traditional languages but instead emphasizes the adaptability and relevance of the languages taught in line with global development. “It wasn’t just a name; it was a vision for the future,” shared Dato’ Dr. Abdul Mua’ti.
The duo also reflected on the initial administrative and disciplinary challenges, underscoring the power of consensus and shared purpose. “We had a vision, and unity was the key that made it possible,” said Dr. Che Ibrahim.
A focal point of the podcast was the faculty motto, “Bahasa Berhemah, Komunikasi Berhikmah” (Language with Decorum, Communication with Wisdom), described as a philosophy that should guide not only communication but also the moral compass of FBMK’s community.
Aligning with UPM’s motto “With Knowledge We Serve”, the speakers called for ongoing translation of these values into impactful academic, social, and community engagement—especially within UPM’s agricultural identity, where language and communication play crucial roles.
In conjunction with the 30th anniversary, FBMK will host the FBMK Alumni Dinner on 4 October 2025 at PKKKAASS UPM. The speakers expressed their hope that the event will reunite alumni and celebrate the faculty’s shared legacy.
The session concluded with an earnest message to FBMK’s younger generation—to honor the past, embrace the present, and build the future with wisdom, responsibility, and heart.
