UPM SERDANG, JUNE 24, 2025 - As a continuation of the Summer Break Programme at School: ELit Olympiad held on 30 April 2025, the Literary Appreciation Programme at UPM welcomed students from SMK (L) Methodist Kuala Lumpur for a day of immersive literary engagement.
The programme kicked off with a literary workshop led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arbaayah Ali Termizi on How to Critically Analyse Literature and Performance. Students explored techniques of writing critiques with hands-on tasks designed to improve their analytical and reflective skills.
In the afternoon, TESL students from the Faculty of Education facilitated a creative activity titled “Symbols in Motion”, where participants interpreted literary symbols from Chua Kok Yee’s short stories and produced TikTok-style videos based on their interpretations. This activity not only supported their understanding of literary elements but also encouraged innovative expression using digital media.
The day concluded with a live theatre performance at Auditorium Radin Umar at the Faculty of Engineering, providing students with firsthand experience of stage performance. As part of their final task, students were given one week to submit a written critical review of the performance for the Best Critical Review Competition, a chance to showcase their newfound skills.
Despite minor challenges in coordination, the programme succeeded in meeting its objectives of promoting English proficiency and literary appreciation through a holistic, arts-integrated approach. Feedback from teachers and students was overwhelmingly positive, praising the engaging and creative delivery of content.
Moving forward, the ELit Olympiad will be trademarked through Putra Science Park to ensure the sustainability and recognition of this community engagement initiative. The faculty looks forward to expanding the programme and deepening its impact in the years to come.
