Brunch Lectures 2023

March 28, 2023, the Department of English at a university in Malaysia organized the Brunch Lectures, a series of thought-provoking talks for literature enthusiasts. The event was held in Dewan Zaba FBMK and was attended by students, academics, and members of the public.


The first session was led by Dr. Nurul Atiqah Amran, an expert in Malaysian Literature in English Novels. Her topic was "Psychogeography: A way to delve into the soul of forgotten, discarded or marginalized aspects of the urban environment in Malaysian Literature in English Novels." She spoke about how psychogeography can be used as a tool to explore the psychological effects of the built environment on human behavior and emotions. Dr. Nurul gave examples of how authors in Malaysian Literature in English Novels have incorporated psychogeographical themes in their works to bring out the hidden aspects of urban landscapes that are often overlooked. Her talk was engaging and insightful, and the audience was left with a greater appreciation for the power of psychogeography in literature.

The second session was led by Dr. Sharon Sharmini Victor Danarajan, a specialist in forensic psychology. Her topic was "To judge or not: My interview experience with pedophiles." Dr. Sharon shared her experiences of interviewing convicted pedophiles in Malaysian prisons. She spoke about how the interviews were conducted and how she dealt with the emotional challenges of hearing the disturbing accounts of the pedophiles' crimes. Dr. Sharon also discussed the ethical dilemmas she faced as a psychologist, such as the balance between the well-being of her clients and the need to protect society from their dangerous behavior. Her talk was thought-provoking and eye-opening, giving the audience a glimpse into the complex world of forensic psychology.

After the sessions, the audience was given the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion with the speakers. There was a lively exchange of ideas and perspectives, and the speakers were able to clarify some of the complex issues that they had raised in their talks.

Overall, the Brunch Lectures 2023 organized by the Department of English was a great success, providing an intellectual and engaging experience for all who attended. The talks by Dr. Nurul and Dr. Sharon left a lasting impression on the audience, sparking conversations and discussions that continued long after the event had ended.
