History

The establishment of FBMK can be traced back to the existence of the National Language Division and English Language Division at the Malayan Agricultural College following the enforcement of the Language Act 1967. In 1971, both of these divisions were merged and named the Language Division, which included the National Language and English Language. This division was upgraded to the Language Department in 1972 and placed under the Faculty of Agriculture.

On January 15, 1975, the Language Department was transferred to the Faculty of Educational Studies. On January 4, 1995, the Language Department was further elevated to become the Faculty of Language Studies. On January 1, 1999, the Development Communication Department from the Faculty of Human Ecology was transferred to the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, with its new name being the Communication Department. With this transfer, the Faculty of Language Studies was given a new name, which is the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK).

Today, FBMK comprises four departments: the Malay Language Department, English Language Department, Foreign Language Department, and the Communication Department. The Malay Language Department offers courses in Malay language and linguistics as well as Malay literature. The English Language Department handles courses in English language and English literature. The Foreign Language Department offers courses in various foreign languages such as Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, French, Spanish, German, and Tamil. The Foreign Language Department also manages courses in Arabic language and Chinese literature. The Communication Department oversees courses in Humanities Communication, Corporate Communication, Journalism, and Broadcasting.

Additionally, FBMK assists the Graduate School in conducting Master's and Ph.D. programs in Malay Language, English Language, Arabic Language, Malay Literature, English Literature, Chinese Literature, and Corporate Communication. FBMK also conducts part-time Trimester Bachelor's programs and supports the Open Education Center in conducting distance learning programs (PJJ).
