
UPM SERDANG - The second day of the Malay Gunpowder and Firearms Seminar, themed "Preservation of Malay Heritage as a Catalyst for Strengthening National Identity," was lively with a special demonstration session. Gunpowder experts Murtaza Maarof and Azman Omar shared their expertise in the making and handling of traditional Malay firearms at the Traditional House Courtyard, Malay Heritage Museum, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on 7 November 2024.
The participants were mesmerised by the traditional fuel-making process and the impressive display of Malay weapons such as the Istinggar gun and Lela cannon. Experts Murtaza and Azman demonstrated the meticulous preparation of the fuel, using natural materials to create the right strength for weapon usage.
The Istinggar gun, one of the well-known Malay weapons from ancient times, was also showcased in this session. With precise manufacturing technology, it stands as evidence of the expertise and accuracy of the weapons used by Malay warriors in defending the homeland. This demonstration not only sparked pride in Malay weaponry heritage but also served as an inspiration to continue preserving history and culture as a catalyst for national identity.
