Department of English

Introduction

The department of English offers programmes in the fields of English language and English literature. Studies in these fields are featured through the process of teaching, research, and consultation. The programmes offered emphasise development of both research skills for individuals aiming to enhance their research ability, and professional skills for language teaching and training practitioners looking to enhance their effectiveness in training programme designing and delivery. Students will receive instruction and supervision that are in line with current developments of knowledge and practice in the fields of English language and literature.

Currently, the department’s programmes have attracted applicants from among individuals with basic training in English language studies, literary studies, language education, and translation studies. Other than that, individuals without prior training in the English related fields mentioned but who have direct working experience in English language related work* have also succeeded in  upgrading their skills and knowledge through the department’s programmes.

Graduates of the English language and literature programmes commonly find employment as teachers at various levels of education, language and communication trainers for corporate clients, researchers in research institutions, lecturers of academic programmes in English language, linguistics and literature in tertiary institutions, as well as in occupations unrelated to the education industry such as in administration, sales and marketing, public relations, publishing, and translation and interpretation.

Graduates of the Master’s programmes are able to further their studies at the PhD level either in Malaysia or abroad.
