Master of Arts (Literacy Studies)

 

Introduction

This programme aims to examine the nature of literacy as skill-based, social and reflexive practice in various contexts, and types of literacy, including functional literacy, workplace literacy, cultural literacy, critical literacy and media literacy. Research in this field investigates the use and impact of spoken and written texts, the processes and skills   involved in literacy events, and the related cultural, linguistic and social processes.

Entrance Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent;

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with CGPA 2.50-2.74 with at least 3 years working experience in related fields;

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent but not CGPA of 2.50, with minimum 5 years of work experience in relevant field.

English Language Requirement

International applicants for the five fields of study must obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or 80 (internet based) or IELTS Band 6.

Programme Requirements

a.          Credit Requirements

Candidates are required to take a minimum of 6 credit hours. Research Methods and any other related courses approved by the supervisory committee.

b.  Other Requirements

i.  Thesis

SPS5999 Master’s Research

The candidate is required to register for the course SPS5999 Master’s Research every semester throughout his/her candidature. This course entails a research project and at the end of the candidature, the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will then be sent for examination and a viva voce will be held to determine the candidate’s competence in the area of study.

ii.  Seminar

SPS5903 Seminar

The candidate is required to enroll for the course SPS5903 which is a presentation of the research proposal. This course should be taken when the candidate’s research proposal has been approved by his/her supervisor. The course will be assessed and the candidate will be given either a Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory grade.
