Master of Arts (English Language) - With Thesis


Introduction  

The programme aims to equip candidates with knowledge of theories and practices relevant to the field of English language studies.  In this programme, candidates are exposed to the latest developments in applied linguistics, English for specific purposes, language and media communication, and English language in literary studies.  The programme aims to train professionals from the public and private sectors to be specialists in the English language. 

Entrance Requirements

  1. Candidates should have a Second Class Upper Division Bachelor’s degree or a minimum CGPA of 3.0 in English language studies or English literature (Major or Minor) from UPM or other recognized universities.
  2. Applicants with a CGPA of less than 3.0 but not lower than 2.75, or a Second Class Lower Division Bachelor’s degree may be considered if they have relevant work experience (min. 3 years), and/or publications, and research experience in related fields.
  3. Applicants who do not hold a Major or Minor qualification in English language studies or English literature must have a minimum of one year direct working or research experience in English Language.  

Semester Programme Offered

First Semester and Second semester of each academic year. 

Programme Requirements 

a.     Coursework Requirements 

Candidates pursuing this programme are required to complete a minimum of 6 credits of coursework. 

i. List of courses

BBI 5201        Research Methods in English Studies                   3 credits and
BBI 5214        Analysing Language                                              3 credits or
BBI 5601        Seminar in Applied Linguistics Studies                3 credits

and any other appropriate course(s) deemed necessary as approved by the supervisory committee/advisor.

b.     Other Requirements

i.  Thesis

SPS 5999        Master’s Research

The candidate must register for the Master’s Research (SPS 5999) course. This is a research project course that will culminate into a thesis by the end of the programme. This thesis will be assessed and a viva voce will be conducted to ensure the candidate’s competence in the field of study.

         ii. Seminar

SPS 5903        Seminar

The candidate is required to enroll for the SPS 5903 course that represents a defense of the research proposal. This course has to be taken as soon as the proposal has been approved by the thesis supervisory committee (not the academic advisor). The course will be assessed and the candidate will be given either a Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory grade.
