Introduction  

The programme aims to equip candidates with in-depth knowledge of theories and practices relevant to the field of Malay Literature. In this programme, the candidate is exposed to the latest developments in Malay Literature in line with their research needs. The programme aims to train professionals from public and private sectors, lecturers from public and private institutions of higher learning, from within and outside the country to be specialists in the Malay Literature.

Admission Requirements

• Applicant must have a Master's Degree in Malay Literature or a related field from a recognized university.
• Applicant who obtains a Master's Degree with a thesis is eligible to apply for this programme if they achieve a CGPA of 3.00.
• Applicant who obtains a Mater's Degree without a thesis is eligible to apply for this programme if they achieve a CGPA of 3.50.

a.   Credit Requirements

PhD candidates who are pursuing this study need to complete 3 minimum credits of coursework which include courses, as follows:

BBK6201 Theory and Philosophy of Literature       3 credits    OR

Other courses offered by the Department.

b.   Other Requirements

      i. Thesis

SPS6999             Doctoral Research

A doctoral candidate is required to register SPS6999 Doctoral Research every semester throughout the course of study. This course entails a research project and at the end of the candidature, the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will then send for examination and a viva voce will be held to determine the candidate's competence in the area of study.

ii.  Seminar

SPS6903 Seminar

A doctoral candidate is required to enroll in the SPS6903 course that represents a defense of the research proposal. This course has been taken as soon as the proposal has been approved by the Thesis Supervisory Committee. This course will be assessed and graded Satisfactory (M) or Unsatisfactory (TM) grade.

iii. Comprehensive Examination

A candidate is required to pass a written and oral comprehensive examination. This examination is taken after the candidate completes all the coursework required in his program of study. It is designed to evaluate the candidate's knowledge in the area of the study and the ability to integrate knowledge about research and theory to address issues related to their field of study.
