Doktor Falsafah

Introduction

The programme aims to equip candidates with knowledge of theories and applications relevant to the field of communication. Candidates are exposed to the latest development and issues in media and communication, and then they pursue an in-depth study of a specific area of media and communication of their interest. This programme is meant for academicians and professionals in the public and private sectors to pursue their studies in one of the following areas of specialisations: 

  • Human Communication; and
  • Mass Communication.

 


Entrance Requirements

Applicants must possess a Master's degree in Communication or related fields from a recognised university with a minimum CGPA of 3.500.

 

English requirements

  • A minimum score of 550 in Paper-based Test TOEFL (Academic Version); or
  • A minimum score of 79-80 in Internet-based Test TOEFL (Academic Version); or
  • A minimum overall band score of 6.0 in IELTS (Academic Training); or
  • A minimal Level 109 in all components in CIEP from ELS Language Center.

 

Programme Requirements

Credit Requirements

Candidates pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy degree are required to complete a minimum of 9 credits of graduate-level coursework, consisting of a compulsory research method course (3 credit hours) and elective courses (6 credit hours).

KOM6111 Advanced Communication Theory 3 credits
KOM6115 Advanced Statistics for Communication Research 3 credits
KOM6119 Qualitative Methods in Communication Research 3 credits

 

AND, any other courses if required by the candidate's supervisory committee. 

 

 Additional Requirements

  • SPS6999 Doctoral Research

The candidate is required to register for SPS6999 Doctoral Research every semester throughout his/her candidature. This course entails a research project, and at the end of the candidature, the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis will then be sent for examination and a viva-voce will be held to determine the candidate's competence in the area of study. 

 

  • Comprehensive Examination (CE)

The candidate pursuing the doctoral programme is required to pass a written and oral comprehensive examination. This examination is taken upon completion of all coursework stipulated in the programme. The comprehensive examination evaluates the candidate's knowledge in the area of study and his/her ability to integrate knowledge about research and theory to address basic issues in the area of concerned. 

 

  • SPS6903 Seminar

The candidate is required to register for SPS6903 which is an oral presentation of the research proposal. This course should be taken when the candidate's research proposal has been approved by his/her supervisor. The course will be assessed and the candidate will be given either a Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory grade.
